Check the expiration or sell-by date
Look for cracks, leaks, or unusual shell damage
Smell the egg after cracking it open
Check for any unusual color, mold, or sliminess
Do the water test: fresh eggs sink and lay flat
If an egg stands upright in water, it is older but may still be usable
If an egg floats, discard it
Observe the egg white and yolk for unusual texture or appearance
If anything smells off, discard the egg
When in doubt, throw it out
