How To Tell If Egg Is Bad?

Check the expiration or “use by” date on the carton

Perform a smell test when you crack the egg open

Do a water test: place in a bowl of water

If the egg sinks and lies flat, it’s likely fresh

If the egg sinks but stands upright, use soon

If the egg floats, discard

Inspect the shell for cracks, leaks, or unusual slime

Check for off-colors (e.g., pink, green, or mold) in the whites or yolk

If the whites are watery and the yolk is broken or abnormally discolored, discard

If the egg smells sulfurous or “rotten,” discard

Discard if the egg has been left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours (or more than 1 hour if above 90°F/32°C)
