Look under the tail
Identify the anus
Check the distance between the anus and the genital opening
A male cat usually has a larger gap between openings
A male cat’s genital opening is typically round
A female cat usually has a smaller gap between openings
A female cat’s genital opening is typically a vertical slit
Look for testicles in males
Testicles may be visible in unneutered males
Testicles may be absent or hard to see in neutered males
Compare the overall shape of the area under the tail
If unsure, ask a veterinarian or shelter staff
