How to Test for Dengue Fever?

See a healthcare professional if you have fever, headache, eye pain, muscle or joint pain, rash, nausea, vomiting, or bleeding

Get a dengue NS1 antigen test during the first 1 to 5 days of illness

Get a dengue PCR test during the first 1 to 7 days of illness

Get a dengue IgM and IgG antibody blood test after about day 5 of illness

Repeat testing if the first test is negative but dengue is still suspected

Ask for a complete blood count to check platelet count and white blood cell count

Ask for liver function tests if dengue is suspected

Seek urgent medical care if you have severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, trouble breathing, or confusion
