Clear the area of rocks, sticks, weeds, and debris
Check soil moisture; till when soil is slightly moist, not wet
Mark the area to be tilled
Choose a tilling tool or machine
Set the tilling depth as needed
Start at one edge of the area
Move the tiller or tool in straight, overlapping passes
Break up large clumps of soil
Remove remaining roots and debris
Mix in compost or amendments if needed
Rake the soil level after tilling
Avoid over-tilling
Water the soil lightly if it becomes too dry
Clean and store tools after use
