Check local wildlife laws and permit requirements before trapping
Use a live trap designed for medium-sized rodents
Place the trap along the groundhog’s travel path near the burrow or feeding area
Bait the trap with fresh vegetables or fruit such as lettuce, carrots, apples, or cantaloupe
Stabilize the trap on level ground and camouflage it lightly if needed
Set the trap according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Check the trap frequently, at least every few hours and never leave it unattended for long
Wear gloves when handling the trap
Relocate or release the groundhog only if legal and permitted in your area
Contact a licensed wildlife control professional if you are unsure how to proceed
