Rest the bruised area
Apply a cold pack for 15–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours
Wrap the cold pack in a cloth to protect the skin
Elevate the bruised area if possible
Use gentle compression with an elastic bandage if swelling is present
Switch to warm compresses after 48 hours if needed
Take acetaminophen for pain if appropriate
Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if bleeding is a concern
Protect the bruise from further injury
Seek medical care if the bruise is very large, very painful, or keeps getting worse
Seek medical care if you have frequent unexplained bruising
Seek medical care if bruising follows a serious injury or head injury
