Rest the thumb and avoid activities that cause pain
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time, several times a day
Wrap the thumb with a compression bandage if advised
Elevate the hand above heart level when possible
Use a thumb splint or brace to limit movement
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Avoid heat, massage, or heavy use in the first 48 hours
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, swelling, deformity, numbness, or inability to move the thumb
Get evaluated if symptoms do not improve within a few days
