How to Treat a Sprained Thumb?

Rest the thumb and avoid activities that cause pain

Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time, several times a day

Wrap the thumb with a compression bandage if advised

Elevate the hand above heart level when possible

Use a thumb splint or brace to limit movement

Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you

Avoid heat, massage, or heavy use in the first 48 hours

Seek medical care if there is severe pain, swelling, deformity, numbness, or inability to move the thumb

Get evaluated if symptoms do not improve within a few days
