Wash your hands before touching the piercing
Clean the area with sterile saline solution 2 times a day
Apply a warm compress for 5 to 10 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day
Leave the jewelry in place unless a doctor tells you to remove it
Avoid twisting, turning, or moving the jewelry
Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and harsh ointments
Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and natural bodies of water
Keep the area dry and avoid tight clothing or pressure on the piercing
Do not use makeup, lotions, or hair products near the piercing
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and if safe for you
Seek medical care if redness, swelling, or pain worsens
Seek medical care if there is thick yellow or green pus
Seek medical care if you develop fever, chills, or red streaks
Seek medical care if the jewelry becomes embedded or hard to move
Seek medical care if the infection does not improve within a few days
