How to Treat First Degree Burns?

Cool the burn under cool running water for 10 to 20 minutes

Remove rings, watches, or tight clothing from the area

Gently clean the area with mild soap and water

Apply aloe vera gel or a fragrance-free moisturizer

Use a clean, nonstick bandage if needed

Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen if appropriate

Keep the area protected from sun exposure

Do not apply ice directly to the burn

Do not use butter, oils, toothpaste, or home remedies

Seek medical care if the burn is large, on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or over a major joint

Seek medical care if signs of infection develop

Seek medical care if pain worsens or the burn does not improve within a few days
