Clip the fur around the hot spot
Clean the area gently with a vet-approved antiseptic
Keep the area dry
Prevent licking, chewing, or scratching with an e-collar
Apply any prescribed topical medication exactly as directed
Use a cool compress for short periods if advised by a vet
Check for fleas, ticks, or other skin irritants
Wash bedding and keep the dog’s environment clean
Avoid using human creams, ointments, or alcohol
Contact a veterinarian if the hot spot is large, painful, smelly, oozing, or not improving quickly
