Stop shaving, waxing, or plucking the area until it heals
Wash the area gently with mild soap and warm water
Apply a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times daily
Gently exfoliate the area with a soft washcloth if skin is not broken
Do not pick, squeeze, or dig at the ingrown hair
Wear loose, breathable cotton underwear and avoid tight clothing
Keep the area clean and dry
Use an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream for short-term irritation if needed
Use an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment only if the skin is open and not allergic to the product
Consider using a salicylic acid or glycolic acid product only on intact skin if tolerated
Trim hair instead of shaving closely in the future
Shave in the direction of hair growth with a clean, sharp razor and shaving gel if you shave
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or repeated ingrown hairs
