Rest the knee and avoid activities that worsen pain
Apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, several times a day
Use compression with an elastic bandage or knee sleeve
Elevate the leg when possible
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if appropriate
Reduce weight-bearing activities until symptoms improve
Do gentle range-of-motion exercises as tolerated
Start physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the knee
Use crutches if walking is painful
Wear a knee brace if recommended by a clinician
Avoid twisting, pivoting, and deep squatting
See an orthopedic specialist for evaluation
Get imaging such as an MRI if needed
Consider corticosteroid injection in selected cases
Consider arthroscopic surgery if symptoms persist or the tear is severe
Seek urgent care for locking, major swelling, inability to bear weight, or severe pain
