Wash your hands before touching the wound
Rinse the road rash gently with clean running water
Remove dirt, gravel, and debris with clean tweezers
Wash the area with mild soap and water
Pat the skin dry with a clean cloth or gauze
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment or petroleum jelly
Cover with a sterile non-stick bandage
Change the dressing daily or when it gets wet or dirty
Keep the wound clean and moist
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed
Elevate the injured area if it is swollen
Watch for signs of infection such as redness, warmth, pus, or fever
Seek medical care if the wound is deep, large, bleeding heavily, or has embedded debris
Seek medical care if you cannot remove all debris
Seek medical care if your tetanus shot is not up to date
Avoid picking at scabs or scratching the area
