How To Treat Scabies?

Use a prescribed scabicide such as permethrin 5% cream or oral ivermectin

Apply permethrin 5% cream to the entire body from the neck down, including under nails and skin folds

Leave permethrin on for 8 to 14 hours, then wash it off

Repeat permethrin treatment in 7 days if directed

Take ivermectin exactly as prescribed, often with a repeat dose in 7 to 14 days

Treat all close household and sexual contacts at the same time

Wash bedding, clothing, and towels used in the past 3 days in hot water and dry on high heat

Seal unwashable items in a closed bag for at least 3 days

Vacuum furniture, carpets, and car seats

Avoid close skin-to-skin contact until treatment is completed

Use antihistamines or anti-itch creams if recommended for itching

Seek medical care if symptoms persist, worsen, or signs of infection develop

Get urgent care if there is widespread crusting, severe rash, fever, or immunocompromise
