Rinse with warm salt water 3–4 times a day
Brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush
Floss carefully around the area if possible
Use an antiseptic mouthwash if tolerated
Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek for 10–15 minutes at a time
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, or very hot foods
Avoid smoking and alcohol
Keep the area clean and free of food debris
See a dentist soon if the swelling lasts more than a few days
Seek urgent dental care if you have fever, pus, severe pain, trouble opening your mouth, or difficulty swallowing or breathing
