Choose the right time when your dog is calm and relaxed
Use dog nail clippers or a nail grinder designed for pets
Have styptic powder/cornstarch and treats ready in an accessible place
Familiarize your dog with handling paws and gently touching nails for a few sessions before trimming
Check each nail for the quick (the pink area inside darker nails)
Trim only the small hooked tip, avoiding the quick
If nails are light-colored, cut just before the quick
If nails are dark-colored, cut very small amounts and stop well before the quick
Take off a little at a time, especially for the first trims
Use a steady grip and keep the paw stable while trimming
If using a grinder, apply light pressure and move steadily to avoid overheating
Reward your dog after each nail and during the process
Trim more frequently in small sessions if your dog resists or nails are long
Check paw placement after trimming to ensure nails aren’t clicking or catching
If you accidentally cut the quick, apply styptic powder and apply gentle pressure until bleeding stops
Stop if your dog becomes very stressed or painful, and consider a professional groomer or veterinarian
