Turn off the power at the circuit breaker for an electric water heater
Turn off the gas supply valve for a gas water heater
Turn off the cold water supply valve to the heater
Open a hot water faucet to relieve pressure
If needed, set the thermostat to the lowest setting
For extended shutdowns, drain the tank if required by the manufacturer
