Inspect the ratchet strap for damage, fraying, cuts, rust, or bent hardware
Confirm the strap rating (WLL) is appropriate for the load and the intended direction of force
Plan the tie-down path so the strap sits flat and does not cross itself or twist
Attach one end of the strap securely to an anchor point rated for tie-down use
Route the strap over/around the load, keeping it centered and snug against the load surface
Attach the other end to the opposite anchor point securely
Ensure the hook/ends are fully seated and locked (no partial engagement)
Keep the free end accessible so you can crank the ratchet
Open the ratchet lever and place the strap tail into the ratchet mechanism correctly
Pull the free strap tail to remove slack until the load is held securely
Close the ratchet lever
Crank the ratchet handle to tighten, watching the strap tension and load position
Stop tightening when the load is firm and the strap is taut (avoid over-tightening)
Confirm the strap is not slipping on smooth surfaces or riding on edges that could cut it
Use edge protectors or padding if the strap contacts sharp corners or abrasive surfaces
Lock the ratchet handle in the engaged position if it has a locking feature
Tuck or secure the excess strap tail so it cannot flap, snag, or loosen
Re-check tension after initial movement (short distance) and again periodically during use
To release, loosen the tension by reversing the ratchet action slowly
Open the ratchet lever and remove the strap tail from the ratchet mechanism
Detach the strap ends from the anchor points
Store the strap clean, dry, and free of twists; keep hooks protected if possible
