Check the thermometer type
Make sure the thermometer is clean
Hold the thermometer at eye level
Locate the temperature scale
Find the top of the liquid column or digital display
Read the number where the level stops
Note the units shown
Record the temperature immediately
Turn off the thermometer if needed
Clean and store the thermometer properly
