Rest the ankle and remove shoes and socks
Use an elastic bandage or ankle wrap
Start wrapping at the ball of the foot
Wrap around the foot once or twice
Move the wrap in a figure-eight pattern around the foot and ankle
Keep the wrap snug, not tight
Overlap each layer by about half the width of the bandage
Cover the ankle and lower foot evenly
Leave toes exposed so you can check circulation
Check that toes stay warm and pink
Loosen the wrap if there is numbness, tingling, or increased pain
Remove the wrap before sleeping unless a clinician says otherwise
Elevate the ankle after wrapping
Seek medical care if you cannot bear weight, pain is severe, or swelling worsens
