Remove existing grass, weeds, rocks, and debris
Grade the soil so it is smooth and slightly sloped away from structures
Loosen the top 2 to 4 inches of soil
Add topsoil or compost if needed
Test and adjust soil pH and nutrients if necessary
Rake the area level and firm it lightly
Water the soil lightly before laying sod
Start along a straight edge such as a driveway or sidewalk
Lay the first row tightly against the edge
Stagger the seams like brickwork
Butt sod pieces tightly together without overlapping
Cut pieces with a sharp knife to fit curves and edges
Avoid leaving gaps between pieces
Roll the sod with a lawn roller to ensure good soil contact
Water the sod immediately after installation
Keep the sod consistently moist for the first 1 to 2 weeks
Water less frequently but more deeply after establishment begins
Avoid heavy foot traffic until the sod is rooted
Mow only after the sod is firmly rooted and grass reaches mowing height
Keep mower blades sharp
Fertilize according to grass type and local recommendations
Check for lifted edges and press them back down if needed
