How to Lay Down Sod?

Remove existing grass, weeds, rocks, and debris

Grade the soil so it is smooth and slightly sloped away from structures

Loosen the top 2 to 4 inches of soil

Add topsoil or compost if needed

Test and adjust soil pH and nutrients if necessary

Rake the area level and firm it lightly

Water the soil lightly before laying sod

Start along a straight edge such as a driveway or sidewalk

Lay the first row tightly against the edge

Stagger the seams like brickwork

Butt sod pieces tightly together without overlapping

Cut pieces with a sharp knife to fit curves and edges

Avoid leaving gaps between pieces

Roll the sod with a lawn roller to ensure good soil contact

Water the sod immediately after installation

Keep the sod consistently moist for the first 1 to 2 weeks

Water less frequently but more deeply after establishment begins

Avoid heavy foot traffic until the sod is rooted

Mow only after the sod is firmly rooted and grass reaches mowing height

Keep mower blades sharp

Fertilize according to grass type and local recommendations

Check for lifted edges and press them back down if needed
