Gather materials: wood boards, screws or nails, wood glue, drill, saw, sandpaper, measuring tape, pencil, and weatherproof paint or sealant
Choose a birdhouse design suitable for the bird species you want to attract
Measure and mark the front, back, sides, floor, and roof pieces on the wood
Cut the wood pieces to size
Sand all edges and surfaces smooth
Drill an entrance hole in the front panel
Drill a few small drainage holes in the floor
Drill ventilation holes near the top of the side panels
Assemble the side panels, front, back, and floor with screws, nails, or glue
Attach the roof so it overlaps slightly to keep out rain
Leave one side or the roof hinged or removable for cleaning
Apply non-toxic, weatherproof finish to the outside only
Mount the birdhouse securely on a post, tree, or wall
Place it in a safe location away from predators and harsh weather
Clean the birdhouse regularly after nesting season
