How to Punctuate an Address?

Put the recipient’s name on the first line

Put the street address on the second line

Put the city, state, and ZIP code on the third line

Use commas between the city and state and after the state if the sentence continues

Do not use a comma between the state and ZIP code

Use a colon after the salutation in a business letter

Use a comma after the salutation in a personal letter

Use a comma after the closing in a letter

Do not add punctuation at the end of each address line

Use periods in abbreviations such as St., Ave., Blvd., Apt., and P.O. Box

Put the country on a separate line for international addresses

Use the proper postal format for the destination country
