Rinse the area gently with clean running water
Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth or sterile gauze to stop bleeding
Wash the skin around the cut with mild soap and water
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment if the skin is not deeply open and you are not allergic
Cover with a sterile bandage or dressing
Change the dressing daily or whenever it becomes wet or dirty
Keep the hand elevated if it is swollen
Avoid picking at scabs or reopening the wound
Use sunscreen on the healed area to help reduce dark marks
Apply petroleum jelly or a fragrance-free moisturizer after the wound closes
Seek medical care if the cut is deep, gaping, bleeding heavily, numb, infected, or from a dirty blade
Seek urgent help if you cannot stop the bleeding after 10 minutes of firm pressure
Get a tetanus shot if your vaccination is not up to date
