Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Wear roomy shoes or open-toe footwear
Avoid tight socks and pressure on the toe
Trim toenails straight across, not too short
Avoid cutting the corners of the nail
Keep the toe clean and dry
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and if safe for you
Do not dig into the nail or cut the ingrown edge yourself
See a doctor if there is severe pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, or repeated ingrown toenails
Seek medical care sooner if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
A doctor may remove part of the nail or treat infection if needed
