Find lava and water
Let water touch lava to create obsidian
Use a pickaxe to mine the obsidian
Use a Nightmare Pickaxe or better
Mine it in the Underworld or anywhere lava and water meet
Use an Obsidian Skin Potion if you need to walk on lava safely
Use a Lava Charm or other lava protection if available
