Press and hold the test/silence button on the alarm
If it is hardwired, turn off the circuit breaker for the alarm
Remove the alarm from its mounting bracket if needed
Unplug the alarm if it has a plug-in power source
Remove the battery from the alarm
Replace the battery or alarm if it keeps chirping
Ventilate the area if smoke, steam, or cooking fumes triggered it
Call emergency services if there is any chance of a real fire
