Craft or obtain a banner
Hold the banner in your hand
Open the map you want to mark
Move to the location where you want the banner marker
Place the banner on the ground at that location
Pick up the map again
The banner will appear on the map as a marker if it is within the map area
To remove the marker, break the banner
