Consult a veterinarian or groomer before attempting anal gland expression
Gather gloves, paper towels, warm water, and disposable wipes
Wear gloves and keep the dog calm and restrained
Lift the tail gently
Locate the anal glands at about 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock around the anus
Place a paper towel or cloth over the area
Apply gentle pressure inward and upward toward the anus
Express only a small amount at a time
Stop if the dog shows pain, swelling, bleeding, or severe discomfort
Clean the area with warm water or pet-safe wipes
Wash your hands and disinfect the area used
Contact a veterinarian if the glands are impacted, infected, or keep refilling quickly
