Ask your veterinarian if the pill can be crushed, split, or given with a small amount of water
Hold the dog’s muzzle gently and tilt the head slightly upward
Open the dog’s mouth by placing your fingers behind the upper canine teeth
Place the pill as far back on the tongue as possible
Close the dog’s mouth and keep it closed
Stroke the throat or blow gently on the nose to encourage swallowing
Hold the muzzle closed until you see the dog swallow
Offer a small sip of water with a syringe if your vet says it is safe
Check the mouth afterward to make sure the pill was swallowed
Use a pill gun or pill popper if needed
Ask your veterinarian about liquid, chewable, or compounded alternatives if the dog refuses pills
