Apply an over-the-counter antiviral cream such as docosanol at the first sign of tingling or itching
Use prescription antiviral medicine if prescribed by a clinician
Keep the area clean and dry
Wash your hands before and after touching the sore
Avoid picking, squeezing, or scratching the sore
Use a cold compress to reduce pain and swelling
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and if safe for you
Avoid acidic, salty, or spicy foods if the sore is on or near the lips
Avoid kissing and oral sex until the sore is fully healed
Do not share cups, utensils, towels, lip balm, or razors
Protect the area from sun exposure with lip balm containing SPF
Seek medical care if sores are severe, frequent, spread to the eyes, or do not heal
