Choose the right grass seed for your climate, sun, and soil
Test the soil and adjust pH if needed
Remove weeds, rocks, and debris from the area
Loosen the top 2 to 3 inches of soil
Add compost or topsoil if the ground is poor
Rake the soil smooth and level
Spread grass seed evenly over the area
Lightly rake the seed into the soil
Press the seed into the soil with a roller or by walking gently over it
Apply a thin layer of straw or seed mulch if needed
Water gently right after seeding
Keep the soil consistently moist until germination
Water lightly once or twice a day as needed
Avoid letting the seed dry out
Avoid heavy foot traffic on the seeded area
Mow only after the grass reaches the recommended height
Use a starter fertilizer if appropriate
Fill thin spots by reseeding if necessary
Continue regular watering after the grass is established
