Trim toenails straight across and keep them short
Gently file the nail surface to remove superficial discoloration
Wash feet daily and dry them thoroughly, especially between toes
Change socks daily, or more often if sweaty
Wear breathable shoes and rotate pairs to let them dry fully
Use antifungal foot powder or spray in shoes and on feet
Apply an over-the-counter antifungal treatment if fungus is suspected
Avoid nail polish and dark polish until the discoloration clears
Disinfect nail clippers, files, and other foot tools after each use
Soak feet in warm water and dry completely afterward
Treat athlete’s foot promptly if present
See a podiatrist or dermatologist for prescription treatment if the nail is thick, painful, or not improving
Seek medical care sooner if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or signs of infection
