Ask your veterinarian if the pill can be crushed, split, or given with food
Wash your hands and prepare the pill, a towel, and a small treat or syringe of water if needed
Stay calm and keep the cat in a quiet, secure area
Wrap the cat in a towel if needed to prevent scratching
Hold the cat gently but firmly, with the head level
Tilt the head slightly upward
Open the mouth by placing a finger at the corner of the jaw
Place the pill as far back on the tongue as possible
Close the mouth and hold it shut briefly
Gently stroke the throat or blow lightly on the nose to encourage swallowing
Offer a small amount of water or a treat after the pill is swallowed
Check that the pill was swallowed and not spit out
Use a pill pocket or a small amount of food only if your veterinarian says it is okay
Use a pill popper if you have trouble giving the pill by hand
Contact your veterinarian if the cat refuses the pill or vomits after dosing
