Find the total number of electrons in the configuration
Match that number to the atomic number of the element
Use the atomic number to identify the atom
If the atom is neutral, the number of electrons equals the number of protons
If the atom is an ion, adjust for the charge before identifying the element
Write the electron configuration in order of increasing energy levels
Compare the configuration to known element configurations
Identify the highest occupied energy level to determine the period
Identify the valence electrons to help determine the group
Use noble gas shorthand if needed to simplify identification
