Wash your hands before and after touching the boil
Apply a warm, moist compress for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Keep the area clean with mild soap and water
Do not squeeze, pop, or pick at the boil
Cover it with a clean, dry bandage or gauze
Change the bandage regularly and whenever it gets wet or dirty
Use over-the-counter pain relief if needed and if safe for you
Avoid shaving over the area
Wash towels, washcloths, and clothing after contact with the boil
Do not share personal items like razors, towels, or bedding
Seek medical care if the boil is very large, very painful, on the face, spine, or near the groin, or if you have fever, spreading redness, or repeated boils
