Use a transfer switch or interlock kit installed by a licensed electrician
Determine your home’s power needs and generator capacity
Choose a generator rated for the loads you want to run
Place the generator outdoors, away from doors, windows, and vents
Use a properly rated generator cord and inlet box
Turn off the main breaker before connecting the generator
Connect the generator to the inlet box with the correct cord

Switch the transfer switch or interlock to generator power
Turn on only the essential circuits one at a time
Monitor the generator load and fuel level
Never backfeed power through a wall outlet
Shut off connected circuits before switching back to utility power
Move the transfer switch or interlock back to utility power
Turn off the generator and disconnect the cord
Store the generator and cords safely after use
