Remove or tape off hardware, glass, and surrounding trim
Clean the door thoroughly with soap and water
Remove dirt, grease, and peeling paint
Sand the surface lightly to smooth it
Fill dents or holes with wood filler if needed
Sand again after repairs
Wipe away all dust with a damp cloth or tack cloth
Apply painter’s tape to edges and nearby surfaces
Use a primer if the door is bare wood, heavily stained, or changing colors
Let the primer dry completely
Stir the paint well
Use a high-quality exterior paint
Paint the recessed areas first
Paint the panels, rails, and stiles
Finish with long, even strokes in the direction of the grain
Apply a second coat after the first coat dries
Check for drips and smooth them out immediately
Remove tape before the paint fully hardens
Reinstall hardware after the paint cures
Keep the door open while drying if possible
Avoid closing the door until the paint is fully cured
