Clean the brick and mortar thoroughly with a stiff brush and mild detergent
Remove dust, soot, grease, and loose debris
Let the fireplace dry completely
Repair cracks, chips, and damaged mortar with suitable filler or mortar repair
Tape off surrounding walls, mantel, and floor
Cover nearby surfaces with drop cloths
Apply a masonry primer designed for brick
Let the primer dry according to the label
Use a paintbrush for mortar lines and a roller for brick surfaces
Apply a high-quality masonry or latex paint
Use thin, even coats
Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next
Apply a second coat if needed
Remove painter’s tape carefully
Let the painted fireplace cure before use
Use heat-resistant paint only if the fireplace interior or firebox will be painted
Avoid painting areas exposed to direct flame unless the paint is rated for that use
