Use single quotation marks around the quote inside the original quotation
Keep the original quotation in double quotation marks
Example: “She said, ‘I will go now.’”
If the quote inside the quote is a full quote, use double quotation marks for the outer quote and single quotation marks for the inner quote
If the quoted material is longer than four typed lines, format it as a block quote and keep the inner quotation marks as needed
Place punctuation according to the sentence structure and the quotation being cited
Include the MLA in-text citation after the closing quotation mark and before the period if required by your sentence structure
