Scrub the rusted areas with steel wool or a stiff brush
Wash the pan with warm water and mild dish soap
Rinse and dry the pan completely
For heavy rust, soak the pan in white vinegar and water for 1 to 3 hours
Check the pan regularly while soaking to avoid overexposure
Scrub off loosened rust after soaking
Rinse thoroughly to remove all vinegar residue
Dry immediately with a towel
Heat the pan on the stove or in the oven to remove all moisture
Apply a thin layer of cooking oil to the entire pan
Bake the pan upside down in the oven at 450 to 500°F for 1 hour
Let the pan cool in the oven
Repeat seasoning if needed
Store the pan in a dry place
Avoid leaving the pan wet or soaking in water
Re-season the pan after each rust removal if necessary
