Identify the place value you want to round to
Look at the digit immediately to the right of that place
If that digit is 5 or more, increase the target digit by 1
If that digit is less than 5, keep the target digit the same
Replace all digits to the right of the target place with zeros for whole numbers
Replace all digits to the right of the target place with zeros or remove them for decimals, depending on the rounding place
Check the result to make sure it is close to the original number
