Give the child acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed on the label for age and weight
Use a warm compress on the painful ear for 10 to 15 minutes
Keep the child upright to help reduce pressure
Encourage fluids
If the child is old enough, have them chew gum or swallow to help ease pressure
Do not put anything into the ear
Do not use ear drops unless a doctor has said they are safe
Avoid smoke exposure
Get medical help right away if there is fever, ear drainage, severe pain, swelling behind the ear, trouble hearing, dizziness, or if the child is under 6 months old
See a doctor soon if the pain lasts more than 24 hours or keeps coming back
