Apply firm direct pressure with a clean cloth or gauze
Keep pressing continuously for 10 to 15 minutes without checking
Elevate the injured area above heart level if possible
Add more cloth on top if blood soaks through; do not remove the first layer
Use a pressure bandage to maintain pressure if available
If bleeding is from a limb, apply a tourniquet above the wound only if bleeding is severe and uncontrollable
If the wound is deep, large, or spurting, call emergency services immediately
If bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes of firm pressure, seek urgent medical help
If there is an object embedded in the wound, do not remove it
After bleeding slows, clean the area gently and cover it with a sterile dressing
Get medical attention for signs of shock, heavy blood loss, or bleeding from the face, neck, chest, abdomen, or genitals
