Rest the injured area
Apply a cold pack wrapped in a cloth for 15–20 minutes at a time
Repeat cold compresses every 1–2 hours during the first 24–48 hours
Elevate the bruised area if possible
Use a light compression bandage if swelling is present
Take acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if bleeding is a concern
Switch to warm compresses after 48 hours to help blood flow
Gently move the area as pain allows
Protect the bruise from further injury
Seek medical care if the bruise is severe, very painful, growing, or occurs without injury
Seek medical care if you take blood thinners or bruise easily
Seek medical care if there is numbness, trouble moving the area, or signs of infection
