How To Treat BV?

See a clinician for diagnosis (BV is usually confirmed with a pelvic exam and lab testing)

Use prescribed antibiotics as directed:

Metronidazole (oral or vaginal)

Clindamycin (vaginal cream or oral)

Avoid sex or use condoms until treatment is completed and symptoms resolve

Avoid douching

Avoid scented vaginal products, washes, or sprays

Keep the genital area clean with water only; use mild, unscented soap externally if needed

Wear breathable underwear (e.g., cotton) and change out of damp clothing promptly

If symptoms return quickly or keep recurring, contact a clinician for a recurrence plan (may include different regimens or longer/maintenance therapy)

Seek urgent care if you have fever, pelvic/lower abdominal pain, pregnancy with significant symptoms, or foul-smelling discharge with bleeding or severe discomfort

Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics or non-prescribed medications
