Choose two corresponding side lengths
Divide the length of the scaled side by the length of the original side
Write the ratio as the scale factor
Use the same units for both measurements
Check that all corresponding sides have the same ratio
For enlargement, the scale factor is greater than 1
For reduction, the scale factor is between 0 and 1
