Gather a screwdriver, replacement handle, and any included screws or spindle
Open the door and keep it steady
Remove the screws from the interior handle or faceplate
Pull both handle halves away from the door
Remove the spindle or connecting bar
Take off any latch trim or cover plate if needed
Remove the latch mechanism from the door edge if replacing it
Insert the new latch into the door edge
Secure the latch with its screws
Slide the new spindle through the latch
Align the new handle halves on both sides of the door
Tighten the mounting screws evenly
Test the handle to ensure it turns and retracts the latch smoothly
Check that the door opens and closes properly
Tighten any loose screws if needed
