Wash your hands and gently cleanse the area with mild soap and water
Apply a warm compress for 5–10 minutes to soften the skin
Do not squeeze, dig, or cut the skin
If the hair is visible near the surface, gently lift it with clean tweezers and pull it out in the direction of hair growth
If you can’t see the hair, stop and don’t force it
Apply a thin layer of antiseptic (such as chlorhexidine or povidone-iodine) after removal
Cover with a clean bandage if it’s open or irritated
Keep the area clean and dry and avoid shaving or friction until healed
Use a gentle exfoliant (like a soft washcloth or mild exfoliating product) once the skin is calm to help prevent recurrence
Seek medical care if there is increasing redness, swelling, warmth, spreading pain, pus, fever, or no improvement after 2–3 days
Seek urgent care if you have diabetes, poor circulation, a weakened immune system, or the infection is rapidly worsening
